A friend showed interest in my paintings — “Which would you choose to have?” He would choose the ship, remembering, being a Scot, what he had seen in the picture and how it fitted in with what he remembered seeing in the hulls of ships on the Clyde River, Scotland. Artists are recorders of what they have seen, experienced or found interesting. Maybe it would be a field of sunflowers, the trunk of a tree, the color of skin, the shape of a body, often compromised by prejudices or opinions but legitimate because the times lived in and what has been learned fixes attention.
